This period drama was created and co-written by Lenny Henry. I noticed in reviews that anecdotally The “Call the Midwife” audience seem to particularly like, perhaps because it takes place around the same time and place, and tries to combine serious drama with some more lighthearted material.
It is mildly entertaining and worth the time. There were a few moments when I knew exactly what was going to happen soon,, but I guess there are only so many subplots a writer can utilize in this sort of drama.
It avoids going to really dark places like it could have a few times, so that is good. In a program self-described as “uplifting” that darker path is best avoided.
I will not be tempted to rewatch series one, but I will watch the next one, assuming it comes down the pike.
